Amnesty International events: more international than ever

On the eve of Human Rights Day, Amnesty International’s English Speaking Group organized a special fund-raising event on December 8th, 2016, at the Globe Bookstore and Cafe in Prague. This night of raffles and quizzes was crowned with ludic and cultural bounties, and with funds for the forthcoming initiatives of 2017.

The meeting was an enriching three-hour soirée during which groups of friends of all ages and countries got to know each other, and had a good time answering the challenges of the contest. Although they faced all kinds of questions, Human Rights-related issues were given particular attention. Prizes included tickets for the theater, the movies, and the Center for Contemporary Art, as well as books, clothes or even drinks and food at the Globe.

Without a doubt, this was a special event, but the English Speaking Group also carries out many other activities. Their goals include not only growing as a group, but also empowering the individual growth of all its members. With this purpose, they offer discussions, documentary screenings, and leisure activities, as well as other projects.

The activist group is made up of volunteers. For years, they have been working on campaigns and activities of a global nature, and organizing direct actions in the heart of Prague. They also draw up action letters which focus on the most urgent cases of Human Rights violations and persecution of victims. They believe that disclosure and intervention are essential means of putting an end to any form of unlawful outrages in the world.

In a dynamic, multicultural and warm environment, the Group gives all of us the chance to share our concerns, regardless of our age, native country, or field of activity. They encourage everyone to participate, since all our voices are worthy of being heard.

Their meetings are open to anyone who cares to join them, and are held every Wednesday night between 19:00 and 20:30 at the Amnesty office (at Gorazdova 10). Even though collective action is important, we shouldn’t forget that change must first come from within ourselves.
